Here I am with my quilting friends on a road trip to participate in a Ricky Tims Super Seminar with Alex Anderson. It started on International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arggg!
I was excited to find out my partner Juliet Fitness and I were both accepted as finalists in the International Miniature Quilt Exchange. We were selected to have our quilts, "Currents" and "Susan's New York Beauty", hang at the Houston Quilt Festival. They traveled all over the US for a year, showing at many of the national quilt shows. Now mine lives in New Zealand with Juliet and hers lives with me in Washington State.
WHY I STARTED?
I had the privilege of teaching quilting at my daughter’s elementary school many years ago. Each year I taught a different grade-level a different project. Each student sat in front of a sewing machine while I guided them from behind. They learned how develop an idea on paper and reproduce it in fabric. The quilts they created were truly remarkable.
HOW I STARTED?
When it was time to move on, a friend of mine who managed a large fabric store, asked if I could teach her customers how to sew. I developed a tote bag pattern that incorporated all the fundamental techniques needed for basic sewing. I knew once a person had the knowledge and basic skills to sew, they could create anything in fabric they wanted. Before they finished their tote bag, they were hooked on sewing.

In the last few years, a lot has changed. Some of the places where I used to teach quilting have closed, and most of the business is now done through the internet. Life has changed, but my passion for teaching hasn't. I'm dedicated to sharing the knowledge I've picked up and developed over time. I'm hoping some of my enthusiasm and love of quilting will be contagious and rub off on you too! I'm offering all my classes online and on-demand, so you can watch and learn on your own time. Plus, you can rewatch each lesson as many times as you need. Everything's up close so you can see it as if you were at your own sewing machine – you'll get to see every technique in great detail.
SPARK YOUR CREATIVITY
My cutting table is 4’x8’ and covered with organized piles of fabric. I'm inspired by color, not stark cleanliness. I have decided PRODUCTIVITY and CREATIVITY are born out of CHAOS. Never apologize for the mess, just keep it from blocking the fire exits.”
